I'm finding I have a strict habit of revising many of my mod's mystery elements. Ideas I initially thought were good, turn out to be "okay" at best. Every transpiring day, I'm thinking about the mod in some way, and the constant shuffling of ideas is difficult. I'm having a stronger respect for people who write mystery novels. It's definitely tougher than I thought!
To mentally prepare myself, I've been grinding through hundreds of
episodes from Detective Conan (aka Case Closed) for inspiration. As an Inquisitor, many of the mysteries you solve are short and concise, similar to the scope of a Detective Conan episode. Others will be mysteries lingering over the duration of your adventure, casting a perceived shadow over the cast of characters. These lingering mysteries generate doubt and turmoil amongst the cast, and you may find yourself having to pick sides. Everyone can be a potential suspect in the mod, including yourself, so be prepared to defend your own interests from characters who doubt your intentions.
Of course, if this was all the mod had, I think it would be boring. This is still a sex mod with dark mature themes, but it's that very reason I feel the mod has something special to offer, otherwise I wouldn't have started this project. What will be interesting is whether I can balance seemingly mindless sex with mentally taxing mysteries. Get that on-and-off switch ready!
This sounds intriguing!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing the fruits of your labour.
"Potential suspect?
ReplyDeletejust pick one and beat a confession out of him.
I'm the inquisition damn it!"
... is what i would expect from anyone calls themselves inquisitor.
though maybe they are nice ones, looking forward to find out
You can be either a good or evil Inquisitor, but your decisions vary based on the situation. On one hand, if you're trying to be good, Malakai will try to compel you into evil decisions. He has authority over you (among other things), and your ability to compromise with him is restricted.
DeleteOn the other hand, at your typical crime scene, a Rook acts as the eyes and ears of your Church's Council, ensuring you are abiding by the Church's protocols. The Council disapproves of indiscriminate killing or violence without proper evidence, so if you're evil, this keeps you and Malakai's antics somewhat in check (that's a Chess joke, hah).
There are circumstances, however, when a Rook is not present. In these situations, you have freedom to do whatever *you* want. Well, unless Malakai is there, then I recommend doing whatever *he* wants...
Looking good.

Any reply involving our hands hovering anywhere near our switches is just going to lead to an awkward pause, isn't it? ;)
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, I'm very intrigued by the qualifying part of that last statement: 'seemingly' mindless sex can hide some really interesting storytelling! It's a positive loop; the more you get to know a character, the more significant the act is, and the more significantly you engage with them, the better you could get to know them. Even if not, some acts are quite significant to the overall story. As long as it's not completely out of the blue or entirely without inner conflict if the PC has been consistently expressing dislike of the NPC in every possible way, it's not all that likely to seem entirely meaningless.
Keep us in the loop, these updates are piquing my curiosity :)
