Characters

NOTE: Character names, descriptions, and portraits are subject to change! The following are some of the major characters you'll meet; many more await you.

The Protagonist

Title: Inquisitor, Squire
Age: 19-25
Starting Alignment: True Neutral
(Choices you make will greatly impact this alignment!)

You play the role of a female inquisitor serving a powerful anti-magic religious sect called the Church of Knox. Her purpose is to conduct heresy investigations and kill anyone with knowledge or possession of magic, including magical contraband. Until now, she's lived a sheltered life with her noble father. Her father -- utilizing his wealthy status and personal connections -- recommends her to the Church's Third District. He felt a connection with the Church would bring their family several incentives, including a stronger support within the community. She's heard bad rumors about the Church, but her father dismissed them, declaring poor locals were spreading baseless gossip. Her carefree lifestyle and lavish upbringing have given her a narrow perspective of the outside world, inducing unfamiliarity with combat and utter ineptness of magic. As she exits her final year of home-schooling, she's uncertain about her future as her father pressures her into joining the Church of Knox. She knows very little about what lies beyond her city's walls. Many of her adventures were spent inside the pages of fictional story novels. Due to inherently benefiting from her father's wealth and prestige, she lacks a morale compass regarding concepts of money and power. How you interpret your role as a woman and Inquisitor may have dramatic repercussions on the Church and its citizens.

Malakai Varus

Title: Head Archbishop, Inquisitor
Age: 30
Artist: scenicreflections.com

Malakai is the overseer to the Church district's armed forces, and one of the two Head Archbishops to the Third District Repentance Enforcement Agency of the Church of Knox. Townsfolk refer to him as "Malakai the Executioner" for his brazen and defiant attitude, often resulting in the killing and injury of many during his heresy investigations. Some see him as the embodiment of Death. Malakai takes a liking to the female protagonist, tricking her into becoming his squire. He is always quick to discipline the protagonist over her inadequacies while sexually harassing her. He regularly appears stressed and impatient, although there's no clear motivation why he behaves this way. How your character tolerates this man could have a resounding impact on your story.

Christoff Naris

Title: Head Archbishop, Inquisitor
Age: 35
Artist: Young-june Choi, deviantART

Christoff is one of two Head Archbishops. With Malakai, the two oversee the Third District Repentance Enforcement Agency of the Church of Knox. The two fail to see eye-to-eye on several issues. Christoff knows Malakai is an important figure, so Christoff tries to turn a blind eye to Malakai's inappropriate behavior. Christoff is a rugged kind man, possessing a strong sense of loyalty and justice. He takes his job very seriously, much to Malakai's dismay.

Aiden

Title: Inquisitor, Squire
Age: ?
Artist: Ahobaga, deviantART

Aiden is a kind and shy young half-elf with aspirations of joining the Church of Knox and making a name for himself. He was abandoned as a child, and entrusted to a human orphanage. He doesn't remember his family or real name. His orphanage simply calls him Aiden.

Kraus Hargraves

Title: Doctor, Scientist
Age: 75
Artist: Mlappas, deviantART

Kraus is the Third District's doctor and scientist. He possesses one of the most brilliant minds in the country, and his ambitious thinking knows no bounds. Ironically, this same ambition led him to many failed scientific ventures, and consequently, some less than profitable investments. He was regularly hounded by the government over unpaid taxes, and one day was nearly beaten to death by debt collectors. When he was about to escape the country, Christoff saw opportunities for Kraus' creative genius, and reached out to him in exchange for Kraus providing his services. In this regard, Christoff has agreed to provide Kraus research equipment and protection.

Cain Vaughan

Title: Intelligence Advisor, Leader of the Kaisers
Age: 48
Artist: Bzitz, deviantART

Cain is the Third District's intelligence specialist, and leader of a group of ruthless mercenaries known as the Kaisers. These criminals are vagabonds, mostly comprised of orcs. They served as the early backbone of Knox's Third District military during their rise to prominence. In agreement for manpower and information, these mercenaries quickly established the Third District's presence over the city. In exchange, the Third District promised the Kaisers wealth, diplomatic immunities, and a seat in the Third District's committee affair meetings. This agreement proved beneficial for both parties, as the Third District could freely impose their religious laws and views while the Kaisers usurped rival gangs. The Kaisers are now one of the few criminal organizations left in the city, although they have been forced to mend most of their ways in accordance to the Church's policies.

In recent years, the role the Kaisers have played in the Third District has diminished significantly with the advent of the more loyal and efficient Rook Guards; however, Knox continues to enforce working relations with the Kaisers to ensure they don't leak sensitive information, and because the Kaisers intelligence network is still an invaluable asset.

When Cain first notices the protagonist, there's something about her he can't ignore...

Tyrus Amerigo

Title: Head of Security, Merchandise Vendor
Age: 55
Artist: Kieran Yanner, Fantasy Fine Art Gallery

Tyrus is a gnome who deals with the financial aspects of the Third District, including the distribution of equipment to Inquisitors. He is always shrewd and manipulative in business negotiations, and is always looking for ways to turn a profit. His loyalty is questionable, but his resourcefulness and cunning are not. Regardless, the Third District pays him handsomely for his financially cunning attributes. His money-loving obsessions incite within him a paranoia over others constantly stealing his wealth. This has resulted in him mastering security and locks to deter would-be thieves. This paranoia works to the Church's benefit, as he is also the Third District's Head of Security.

Katarina Zephyr

Title: Foster Daughter and Bodyguard to Pope Ferdinand Knox II
Age: 27
Artist: HELMUTTT, deviantART

Katarina is the personal secretary and bodyguard to Pope Ferdinand Knox II. Her father was a soldier and her mother a diplomat. At a young age, she lost both of them to the cruelty of war. Her father was killed by magic in a conflict with a warring nation, while her mother died from an illness suffered while abroad. With no one to turn to, she becomes a wandering orphan. One cold rainy night, the Pope of the Church of Knox, Pope Ferdinand Knox II, notices her alone on the streets. Katarina's appearance reminds Ferdinand of his deceased daughter, and also learns Katarina lost a family member to the perils of magic. Ferdinand interprets this encounter as a sign from Heaven, and decides to adopt Katarina as his new daughter.

As the Pope's new daughter, Katarina becomes extremely loyal to him and the Church. Her unwavering faith and devotion make her the perfect bodyguard. As a soldier's daughter, she has honed her fighting skills over the years in hopes of meeting her deceased father's expectations. She is a perfectionist regarding even the most minor details, but she lacks the patience and sympathy required to make informed unbiased decisions.

Ferdinand Knox II

Title: Pope, Leader of the Church of Knox
Age: 70
Artist: TheBastardSon, deviantART

The Pope of the Church of Knox, and leader to Knox's four districts. Before his rise to stature, Ferdinand was a young, astute, and respected diplomat and politician. Three decades ago, Ferdinand and his eight year old daughter were traveling in a city, when a fight broke out between rival gang factions. His daughter was the unintentional target of an errant fire spell. She was engulfed by the flames, suffering a tragic death. His daughter's agonizing screams and charred corpse haunt him to this day.

Following his daughter's tragedy, he contemplated suicide, until one day, he says he was visited by an angel from Heaven. This angel took on the embodiment of a little girl. She instructed him that life is too valuable to discard, and to instead, embrace the shackles of others -- protect them as though they were your own children.

Using his political influence and wealth, he retired from politics and formed his own religion to promote awareness against magic. He named it after the child in his dreams, and took on the name Pope Ferdinand Knox II, reserving the first Pope's name in honor of the child, in case she were to ever again grace his plane of existence.

"The Council"

Title: Church of Knox District Judges
Ages: Unknown
Artist: ReMeDy

Anonymous individuals with the power to sentence heretics to death. No one knows exactly what to call them. They use several aliases, but they're commonly referred to as "the Council." The Council are the ultimate authority on heresy investigations, serving as judges, and tasking inquisitors to kill those who use or possess magic. They oversee these cases through the eyes and ears of Rooks. To ensure the Council's protection, their identities and location are a closely guarded secret. Each of the four districts has their own three-man Council, and each Council doesn't know the identities of the others. To ensure their identities are not leaked, they're isolated, serve life-long terms, and are forbidden from abandoning  their roles on penalty of death. Council members are appointed by Pope Ferdinand II himself; therefore, the Pope is the only one with knowledge of the full identities of the Council.

Rook Guards (aka "Rooks")

Title: Inquisitor Body Guards
Artist: jzhangart, blogspot

Solidarity, strength, and symbiotic. These are the guiding principles of Rook Guards. Inquisitors are their beacons, and they are the Inquisitor's swords. They offer invaluable protection to the Third District, especially as Inquisitors hunt volatile heretics. The value of an accomplished and experienced Inquisitor is without measure. No one knows this better than Rooks, who are prepared to lay down their existence for the benefit of an Inquisitor's safety. Replacing a Rook is an inconvenience; replacing an Inquisitor is a tragedy.

Created by Kraus, Rooks offer protection to the Third District's inquisitors, but their ultimate purpose is serving as the eyes and ears of Knox's reclusive Council, who review Inquisitor's heresy cases. Each Rook is imbued with scientific technologies for surveillance purposes. They essentially act as portable monitoring devices, ensuring the law of Knox can be presided over a large expanse of distance in even the most fanatical heretic hot zones, while the Council observes safely from afar. The exact science, history, and nature of Rooks are unknown. Despite their positive qualities, they possess some "slight" imperfections...

Dungeon Master, Dlanor A. Knox

Title: Dungeon Master
Artist:7th Expansion

Dlanor is the dungeon master the protagonist meets at the game's introduction, which is to say she has no direct influence on the story whatsoever. She and esteemed 20th century mystery writer, Robert Knox, are symbolic inspirations to my mod, and drove me to make the mod in the first place. Dlanor will represent my in-game avatar, so treat her kindly!
