The Dark Paladins of Knox is a role-playing mod for the original Neverwinter Nights on the PC.  You must play a level 1 female Paladin, Fighter, Barbarian, or Rogue with a Charisma of 14 or higher. This mod is a text-driven experience with combat and mystery solving, and offers a plethora of branching dialog options. There are no conversational skill checks, but what you say can often impact the story.

The mod draws from a culmination of other mods, licensed games, and the Japanese visual novel scene to provide a thought-provoking narrative on how positions of authority can be abused and how some religious views can be contorted to fit selfish goals.

The concept of evil and religion is a central theme in the Dark Paladins of Knox. It caters to specific tastes, namely you must enjoy playing as a female who can overlook sexual discrimination, and be tolerant of other religious views. The mod includes your female romancing various males with evil or questionable motives, so this mod appeals mostly to masochists; however, part of this mod is also the adversity you can exhibit against these forces. Your protagonist can be either defiant, neutral, or submissive. Many of the men you encounter are in positions of authority, so defiance is not always about getting what you want, but rather about maintaining your sense of independence.

You play as a female Inquisitor serving a powerful religious sect. You are a new recruit - a Squire - recommended to the church by your wealthy father. The job pays well and should bring tremendous status to you and your family. Squires must serve under an Archbishop. Archbishops hand-pick Squires they feel are compatible. Together, they perform heresy investigations and executions declared by the Church. You will not only be involved in combat, but also solve murder mysteries as you find anyone who uses or possesses knowledge of magic, and eliminate them.

Your assigned Archbishop is a man named Malakai. He is arrogant, powerful, easily offended, and discriminatory towards women. How you tolerate Malakai’s actions -- and other characters you meet -- will play a large role in shaping your future with the Church of Knox, resulting in one of multiple endings.

The religion of Knox is a highly organized powerful church with thousands of followers across the country. Many outsiders do not share the views preached by Knox, but they hide their disdain in fear of persecution. The religion was initially a grassroots movement protesting the rise of dark magic and the belief dark magic originated from demons. To fight these demons, God entrusted special holy magic permitted for use in demon hunting. The Church views dark magic as contradictory to mankind. Those who brandish such magic are called heretics, and must be eliminated.

How will your character interpret their role as an Inquisitor? Who will your character trust? What mysteries lie within the Church of Knox?
